Note: As seen from the phase diagram in figure, ferrosilicon with a silicon content exceeding 54.6 wt.% Si the Zeta is supposed to undergo an eutectoid transformation when the temperature is lower than 937C:
Zeta -> FeSi2 + Si (1)
In this reaction the high temperature Zeta -phase (also called a FeSi2.33) is transformed through an eutectoid reaction into the low temperature FeSi2 -phase and secondary deposited silicon metal. This reaction have been studied by several authors. Normally this reaction have been studied through a prolonged heat treatment. The evidence of reaction (1) have been found by metallographic studies. DeHuff at al., [6] have prepared a temperature-time-transformation diagram shown figure. The minimum time for the complete transformation is approximately 6 hours at 0C.
