As shown in Figure with the example of the alloy AlCu4, the required quenching rate can only be estimated roughly from the isothermal TTT diagram. In spite of that, it is quite clear that very high quenching rates of several 100 K/s are required in order to suppress the precipitation of Al2Cu at the grain boundaries with the abovedescribed consequential strength and corrosion problems. Quenching is mostly performed in watery baths or by spray cooling. For this purpose, care must be taken to assure rapid movement of the components from solution annealing to quenching.
