Iron and steel specimens-lain and alloy steel specimens, high speed steel specimens
Material: Iron and steel specimens
Method: Chemical etching
Etchant (Electrolyte): 50 ml HCl (conc.), 50 ml H2O.
Procedure: Immerse specimen in solution heated to 160-180 F for 15 s to 30 min. De-smut by vigorous scrubbing with vegetable fiber brush under running water. Stainless steel specimens may be de-smutted by dipping in a warm 20% HNO3 to give a bright finish.
Note: Plain and alloy steel specimens, high speed steel specimens, cutlery (12-14% Cr) and stainless steel specimens. General purpose etchant.
