Material: Stainless and high temperature steel specimens
Type: Macro
Method: Chemical etching
Etchant (Electrolyte): 10 ml HNO3 (conc.), 3 ml HF (48%), 87 ml H2O to 40 ml HNO3 (conc.), 10 ml HF (48%), 50 ml H2O.
Procedure: Immerse specimen in solution heated to 71.1-82.2 C (160-180 F) until desired contrast is obtained. Rinse and dry.
Note: Stainless steel specimens and high temperature alloys. Ratio HNO3-HF varies.
