Note: Continuous heating and cooling transformation diagram of hypothetical Ni-base superalloy. The left and right parts of this CHCT diagram represent the phase transformations occurring during heating and cooling correspondingly. Thermal histories: A slow heating rate (high heat input welding) results in liquation cracking in HAZ; B fast heating rate (low heat input) suppresses the liquation reaction.
The CHCT diagram in Figure illustrates potential fabricability (weldability) problems as liquation cracking and precipitation of embrittling phases. The development of CHCT diagrams for new and existing engineering alloys could help to identify and avoid / solve such fabricability issues. A CHCT diagram in particular alloy would allow to determine the critical heating rate (and respective weld heat input) to avoid the liquation reaction, or the critical range of cooling rates to avoid the precipitation of particular embrittling phases.
