Note: The relatively low additions of chromium and molybdenum are not sufficient to suppress the pearlite transformation. On account of vanadium impurities often present, fine MX precipitates, probably containing a high proportion of molybdenum, are usually present in the pre-eutectoid ferrite.
The steel is normally used after the following heat treatment: 920 C 30 min/air + 720 C 45 min/air.
A microstructure consisting of ferrite and coagulated bainite is formed. At operating temperatures, which extend up to 560 C, fine, needle-shaped M2X-(Mo2C) precipitates are formed. These needles often nucleate with a regular orientation relationship on MX precipitates. This gives rise to typical "H" shapes. The orientation relationship between MX and M2X is presumably the same as that given for the microalloyed steels. At very low rates of cooling from the austenitizing temperature or after very long tempering treatments M23C6 may be precipitated in globular or needle-like form.
