Note: The transformation and precipitation behaviour of this steel is shown in Fig. In contrast to steels with a low chromium content, the formation of M23C6 begins here already on the austenite grain boundaries at cooling rates which do not yet lead to the formation of ferrite. The precipitates usually have a dendritic form. At very cooling rates the M2X borders coagulate. The high chromium content suppresses the bainite reaction. An M2X eutectoid in the form of borders forms instead of pearlite.Cementite is precipitated during tempering of the martensite, and M23C6 and M2X in the pre-eutectoid ferrite.
