Heat Treatment
Hardening: Pre-heating in two stages: 600650C (1110 1200F) and 850900C (15601650F). Austenitizing temperature: 9501150C (1740 2100F) normally 1020C (1870F). Holding time: 30 minutes (10 minutes at 1100C (2010F) and above. Quenching media: Vacuum furnace with high speed gas at sufficient overpressure (25 bar). Martempering bath or fluidized bed at approx. 550C (1020F). Forced air/gas.
Tempering: For cold work applications tempering should always be carried out at 560C (1040F) irrespective of the austenitizing temperature. Temper three times for one hour at full temperature. The tool should be cooled to room temperature between the tempers. The retained austenite content will be less than 3% after this tempering cycle.
